Abstract

The complete solution of the problem of representation of the finite-order variational sequence in field theory by differential forms is presented by means of formal differential operators. A close relationship between this representation and familiar objects of the calculus of variations, such as Lagrangians, dynamical forms, Euler-Lagrange and Helmholtz-Sonin mappings is described and illustrated by examples.
