Abstract

Since the report for 1939 contains the summary of nine winters' data with a wealth of material on the depth, density, and water‐content of the snow and method of forecasting the runoff, it is herewith reproduced as an important link in the study of the feasibility of basing forecasts of the streams of the Cascade Range on the residual snow‐cover. An earlier paper on winter precipitation versus snow‐survey for forecasting on the Skagit River, Washington, has teen printed [Trans. Amer. Geophys. Union, 1938, pp. 695–702].(The special feature in forecasting the levels of Lake Chelan is the use of the quantitative method of snow‐surveying as a basis for forecasting lake‐levels by the percentage‐method.—Editor.)
