Abstract

The International Standards Organization Technical Committee 112 (ISO/TC 112) held a plenary meeting in Moscow, USSR 15–19 April 1991. This is the first such meeting since 1972. Delegations from China, Germany, Japan, Switzerland, United States, and the USSR were present. Dana Hauschulz served as the delegate from the United States. The function of ISO/TC 112 is standardization in the field of vacuum technology both in the area of apparatus (essential characteristics, dimensions, and materials) and in the area of definitions and methods of measurement. The five resolutions adopted at this meeting pertain to ultrahigh vacuum gauging, leak detection, vacuum materials and cleaning, and vacuum pumps. These are fully described in this report. Currently, the United States has only observer status on this committee. However, in view of a resurgence of activity by this international standards body and in recognition of movement towards a global economy, the American Vacuum Society board of directors has authorized the pursuit of an active role in this international committee. The means for securing this involvement are also explained.
