Abstract

Problems of tuberculosis in Indonesia may among others be reflected as follows: The results of conducted surveys in the infectious tuberculosis in several areas of the various provinces had indicated that the BTA prevalence of pulmonary tuberculosis did not show significant differences with the prevalence 20 years ago. Up to now there exists no good recording system for tuberculosis cases in Indonesia. The present effective recording system does not reflect the entire coverage at national level Only part of the results of the programme in various provinces and the result of the BP4 activities were representing the complete records, whereas reporting and recording from the government hospitals are not complete. Therefore just a minor part of the total drug package purchased and used did not reveal the exact final results The coverage of pulmonary treatment in Indonesia has for the greater part been managed by the private practitioners, the total number of them is about 25,000 practitioners. It is estimated that the number of pulmonary TB patients treated by the private practitioners was about 250,000 people. Even more, this could not be considered as based on national recording system. Private practitioners seldom use bacteriological examination facilities, so that major wrong treatments or exaggregated treatments were delivered The number of pulmonary TB suspects without such treatment by government and private sectors was about 150,000 patients If the price of one package had cost an average amount of Rp.200 000,- then a squandering of Rp.30,000,000,000 (30 billion rupiah) had taken place. There have been no effective coordination activities between the executing officer of the national pulmonary TB control programme and other non-programme sectors (Directorate General of Community Health, Directorate General of Medical Care) and the private sector. There was no uniformity in drug regimens, diagnostic procedures, examination methodology and healing criteria, relapsing and failures of treatment. These will develop impacts and cause difficulties in the preparation of reports, recording and evaluation.
