Abstract
To the Editor:We agree with Dr. Harkavy that a well-controlled, double-blind study would be ideal to determine the extent of topical iodine-induced toxicity; however, from our study within its limitations, we strongly suggest there is toxicity, and we look forward to future controlled studies duplicating our results. In response to his inquiry about maternal dietary iodine intake in Israel: iodine intake meets the Recommended Daily Allowance requirements. All women involved in the study were residents of Tel Aviv suburbs, with similar iodine intakes, and therefore there should be no difference among their offspring.A prospective study evaluating the efficacy of iodine compared with chlorhexidine in alcohol for topical disinfection is currently in progress.
