Abstract

This invited commentary is a reflection on the impacts of the 1990 Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA) on museum anthropology. Over the last 20 years, this law has resulted in many positive changes and has revealed the continuing negotiation museums enter into with native peoples. Looking beyond episodic changes, this essay asks what permanent changes repatriation has inspired. It asks: How has repatriation been translated into daily work and a museum's organization?
