Abstract

This paper provides an overview of the market situation and the economical, environmental and technical aspects of renewable energy in Austria, with a special focus on biomass. 27 % of the total energy consumption in Austria is supplied by renewable energy sources (e.g., hydropower, biomass, solar energy), whereby biomass sources such as fuelwood, wood chips, bark, sawdust, straw or biogas make up nearly half of this amount. Every year in Austria, renewable energy sources provide a total of 312 PJ. The use of renewable energy has doubled from 150 PJ to about 310 PJ over the past 20 years.
