This column was established by Richard Snodgrass in 1998 and was continued by Ken Ross from 1999 to 2005. It celebrated one of the key aspects that makes us grow as a research community: the papers that influence us. At each issue, different members of the data management community wrote anecdotes about a paper that had a unique impact in their career. The anecdotes highlighted that impact can come in many forms. A paper's value is not only in its citation count, but also in the way it influences individuals who in turn influence other individuals that make up our community. Such impact is not countable. When the SIGMOD Record's editor-in-chief Rada Chirkova approached me to revive this column last year, I was immediately excited. I would like to thank Rada Chirkova, Richard Snodgrass, and Ken Ross for this opportunity. I am delighted to present the three invited contributions for this issue. For educators and community members looking for a practical entry into place- and community-based education, this book is a longawaited answer. At 167 pages, it is a reasonable length, an enjoyable read, and broken into chapters that make it easy to find any aspect of place- and community-based education that brings the reader to the book. Authors Smith and Sobel helped lead the dialogue for place-based education from opposite U.S. coastal regions—Smith in the Pacific Northwest and Sobel in New England. The ideas presented in this book pick up on their earlier writings and are grounded in experiences of real teachers in real classrooms, with successes and challenges evaluated through sound methodologies. By setting out the theoretical and practical reasons for grounding our students in the places that they live, this book provides guidance for this approach to schooling in a way that has not been done before. I teach an integrated science and social studies methods course for pre-service teachers that is focused on place-based education. My students often perceive place-based education as filled with obstacles, many of which are addressed outright in the preface of the book. This strong piece of the book provides what Smith and Sobel term “reconceptualizations” for each of these perceived obstacles; they reconstruct the reasons for and inroads into a holistic relationship between children and the natural and social components of the communities in which their learning is nested. These reconceptualizations are then artfully supported throughout the book. One misconception of place-based education is that it is the same thing as environmental education. A common reflection among my students is that they have a genuine interest in place-based 230 education, but are frustrated by the built environment and lack of nature accessible to the urban schools in which they teach. A strength of this book is the affirmation that place-based education is more than children’s time in nature. Rather, it is the reestablishment of children into the social, cultural and natural components that comprise their everyday lives, no matter where they live. To emphasize this point, the first chapter is a case study of a successful place- and community-based school model in Boston, Massachusetts. Wilderness is not a resource of the school’s immediate environment, but nature can be found in a nearby cemetery; the strength of the community connections and student-led inquiry create a successful school model. To elucidate the character of community connections, guest author Delia Clark contributes a chapter on collaboration. This chapter illuminates the way that community members come to schools and schools to communities, how collaboration is fostered and maintained, and offers practical advice for building strong relationships including time and a sense of humor. A particularly useful chapter for a general audience is on definitions and antecedents developed over the last decade of published work on place- and community-based education. The chapter draws on the theoretical frameworks of Dewey, Kilpatrick, Counts and Rugg as the foundations of this approach, and then explores the evolution of place- and community-based education from service learning, nature and environmental education, cultural journalism, and local entrepreneurialism. The concise chapter clearly establishes both the roots of place-based education and the efficacy of this model before describing its place in the current context of No Child Left Behind and climate of academic achievement. In another chapter, Smith and Sobel offer practical ways for teachers to introduce place-based education into traditional disciplines. This chapter concludes with a bulleted list of starting points and websites for resources. Any reader looking to make inroads into this approach to teaching and learning will utilize the succinct and workable possibilities in this text. 231 Finally, this practical book does not lay out a lockstep recipe with which to achieve successful schools. To the community, We are honored and excited to share our third annual volume of the Asian American Research Journal with you all. This journal was established in Fall 2020, amid the pandemic, as a means of battling historical erasure and misunderstandings of Asian American history that continue to impact our community today. Our goal is to provide a platform to center Asian American and Asian diasporic experiences, studies, and research; we believe that by uplifting each other’s voices, we can inform, educate, and spark change. This volume’s theme of “Shaping Our Legacies” explores how generations of Asian Americans have evolved and persevered throughout time. The stories in this publication invite readers to retrace the roots of Asian American identity and contemplate how these communities have continued to persist in the face of hardship, fight against injustice, and build upon their cultures. Through this issue, we hope you will gain a deeper understanding of our present, and perhaps even a glimpse into our future, as our diverse communities continue to shape the legacies imparted upon them. Strategic library and information services models for the visually impaired persons: The South African Library for the Blind perspective

The South African Library for the Blind (SALB) contributes to the quality of life of print-impaired people encouraging independence through access to information, informed decision making, and taking pleasure in the enjoyment of recreational reading. In realizing the vision, SALB implemented two strategic models; agent mini-libraries and comprehensive mini-libraries. Management and administration of the services rendered is covered in detail. The project was pioneered in one of the provinces and has been rolled out to other provinces. The paper highlights how visually impaired people experience in a tangible manner, assistive technologies, training and interaction with community members and use libraries.

Community management does not equate to participation: fostering community participation in rural water supplies

Community management has remained the dominant paradigm for managing rural water supplies in sub-Saharan Africa. There is a widespread perception that community participation principles are inherently embedded in the community management model. In this paper, we analyze how an international nongovernmental organization engages rural communities in their rural water projects, and the ways in which community members are able to participate in the management and governance of their water supplies. Qualitative data were collected in 18 study communities – six each in Ghana, Kenya, and Zambia – through interviews, focus group discussions, and participatory mapping with community and water committee members. We argue that community management does not inherently lead to broader community participation, but rather that fostering community participation requires intentionality. We recommend implementers use collaborative planning processes and explicitly engage with intra-community diversity and inequalities in order to facilitate the opportunity for all community members to meaningfully participate in decision-making. Collaborative planning with diverse groups will also allow community members to realize their rights to transparency and accountability once community management structures are in place.

Advances in Information Technology Improve Open Science Use of Underwater Imagery

Underwater imagery (including video and still frame photos) are routinely collected with crewed and uncrewed submersible platforms and represent an unparalleled visual repository of knowledge about marine organisms and how they interact with their environment in a given spatiotemporal setting. Underwater images are of key importance for scientific analysis to inform policy and resource management decisions and are also in high demand for media and documentary releases. Underwater imagery requires accompanying metadata describing the contents of the imagery to achieve FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable) guidelines. This essential metadata generation step is an intense - often manual - process requiring scientists to provide video annotations that are a prerequisite to achieving Open Science initiatives and ensuring that data are available for broad exploitation in standard or common formats. Unique data management challenges set underwater imagery apart from most other oceanographic and geophysical data collections. Consistently high data volumes coupled with rapidly evolving technical advances in sensors can exceed data processing, management, and user capabilities. These challenges often require unique storage and data access solutions. These concerns are compounded by imagery collected from previous sea-going expeditions. These historical data - often decades old - take on a new importance in the face of climate change, and represent an opportunity to evaluate - visually and quantitatively - change over time for a specific organism or location. It is necessary that these historically significant records are retained and equally available for comparative analysis. Through the past two decades, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has researched, implemented, and refined processes that support best data management practices at minimal cost. NOAA Ocean Exploration has sponsored hundreds of ocean exploration missions since its inception in 2001. Ongoing collaboration between NOAA Ocean Exploration, the NOAA Central Library and the NOAA National Centers for Environmental Information has progressively defined best data management practices and developed tools to enhance user access to oceanographic data with a specific focus on underwater imagery. This collaboration resulted in a defined video metadata standard and a Video Data Management System to make analog video media available as a Library resource. Subsequently the Video Data Management Modernization Initiative modeled digital video access, based on entertainment industry standards which stored high resolution videos in deep storage with more easily accessible low-resolution proxies on spinning disk. Over the years, this model has been refined to manage imagery data of varying complexity as well as to leverage technological advancements to further improve data Fairness. We will offer an overview of several ongoing projects that leverage information technology advancements in cloud, artificial intelligence, machine and deep learning applications to benefit the imagery data analysis and management community by creating tools and algorithms in a crowd-sourced, open data manner. The capabilities of NOAA's imagery data management system have, and continues to, grown extensively thanks to broad collaboration with the larger ocean imagery data management and analysis community.
