Abstract

Roger Medearis, Godly Susan, 1941. Egg tempera, 70.1 x 60 cm (27 5/8 x 23 5/8 in.). Smithsonian American Art Museum, Washington, D.C., Gift of Roger and Elizabeth Medearis One look at Godly Susan and I was hooked. I didn't know who the artist was, but this neo-Renaissance portrait of an elderly woman seated in a midwestern landscape simply glowed. The affection the artist felt for his subject was obvious; his admiration for her strength of character even more so. Her lace collar and home-knit sweater, her misshapen body and crippled hand offered devoted testimony to a life in which love for beauty was balanced with spiritual toughness. A quick visit to the library and the mystery was transformed into admiration.
