  • Uswatun Hasanah + 1 more

Islamic education has an essential role in shaping religious moderation. However, the increasingly complex challenges of extremism and religious intolerance require a more progressive approach to dealing with them. This research aims to optimize religious moderation through progressive Islamic education and examine the philosophy of Islamic education as a conceptual foundation. This study used a qualitative approach with literature analysis and documentation data collection techniques. The research results show the importance of religious moderation in complex social, political, and cultural contexts. The philosophy of Islamic education provides a solid theoretical and methodological foundation for developing a progressive Islamic education that promotes religious moderation. Ontologically, the understanding of religious moderation emphasizes recognition of the complexity of spiritual reality and the importance of tolerance for different interpretations and practices. In epistemology, a moderate approach recognizes that knowledge about religion is limited and influenced by social and cultural factors. Therefore, critical thinking, interreligious dialogue, and continuous learning are essential in achieving religious moderation. In axiology, religious moderation emphasizes values such as tolerance, mutual respect, peace, justice, and the adaptability of values to the development of society and changing times. In conclusion, optimizing religious moderation through progressive Islamic education based on a study of Islamic educational philosophy encourages a broader understanding and application of religious moderation in society, especially in the context of diverse, multicultural education.

  • Dailani Ismail + 3 more

This study discusses the role of religious moderation in the context of social welfare, focusing on a multidimensional approach to poverty alleviation and human development. In a pluralistic society, religious moderation becomes key to creating a harmonious and inclusive social environment. By promoting values of tolerance and mutual respect among religious groups, religious moderation can reduce social tensions and discrimination that hinder community empowerment. This research explores how the integration of religious moderation principles into social policies and development programs can create strong social networks, strengthen interfaith collaboration, and enhance community participation in economic empowerment initiatives. Religious moderation not only serves as a tool to reduce conflict but also as a driver of innovation in inclusive social policies that are responsive to marginalized groups. The study also identifies challenges in implementing religious moderation, such as resistance from certain groups and the still-present exclusive paradigms in society. Therefore, strengthening inclusive religious education and engaging religious leaders in intergroup dialogue is crucial to raising awareness about the importance of moderation in achieving social welfare. The findings show that a multidimensional approach involving religious moderation can accelerate poverty alleviation and improve human quality of life as a whole. The conclusion emphasizes the need for collaborative strategies involving the government, civil society organizations, and religious communities to achieve sustainable development goals.

  • Mariani Harmadi + 3 more

Religious moderation is a vital concept in maintaining harmony within plural societies. However, many studies on interfaith dialogue remain limited to theoretical perspectives, lacking empirical evidence on how religious moderation is practiced at the grassroots level. This gap has created a need for research that not only examines the theological foundation of moderation but also explores its real-life application among diverse faith communities. This study aims to analyze the role of religious moderation in interfaith dialogue by integrating theological reflection with field-based insights. Using a qualitative descriptive method, data were collected in July 2025 through a literature review and a field study involving semi-structured interviews with four informants, including Christian pastors, Muslim scholars, researchers, and FKUB representatives in Central Java. The findings highlight that religious moderation—manifested through tolerance, balance, and justice—can serve as a sustainable framework for present and future interfaith dialogue. This study concludes that embracing religious moderation is essential for nurturing social harmony, preventing conflict, and promoting a more inclusive religious narrative in an increasingly globalized world.

  • Muh Ibnu Sholeh + 1 more

In today’s increasingly interconnected and multicultural world, religious diversity presents both opportunities and challenges to social cohesion. Religious moderation emerges as a critical approach to fostering mutual respect, tolerance, and peaceful coexistence among communities with differing beliefs and practices. This study explores strategies and best practices in implementing religious moderation as a tool to strengthen intergroup harmony and reduce religion-based conflicts in pluralistic societies. Using a qualitative descriptive-analytical method supported by literature reviews, policy analyses, and case studies, this research identifies three key dimensions: (1) educational approaches that integrate moderation values into formal and informal curricula, (2) community-based initiatives that facilitate interfaith dialogue and collaborative problem-solving, and (3) government-led policies and legal frameworks that support inclusivity and protect minority rights. The findings reveal that societies adopting a holistic, multi-stakeholder approach to religious moderation demonstrate higher levels of trust, reduced polarization, and sustainable peace. This study highlights the need for cross-sector collaboration between policymakers, educators, religious leaders, and civil society actors to build a culture of mutual understanding and respect.

Religious Moderation in Shaping Interfaith Relations: A Comparative Study of Indonesia and Malaysia
  • Aug 28, 2024
  • Religious: Jurnal Studi Agama-Agama dan Lintas Budaya
  • Ahmad Hermawan + 1 more

This study aims to examine the role of religious moderation in shaping interfaith relations in Indonesia and Malaysia. The research investigates how state policies and community-based initiatives contribute to social harmony and interfaith cooperation. It also seeks to identify the challenges each country faces in promoting religious moderation and its impact on Muslim-Christian interactions. The research employs a qualitative comparative approach, incorporating in-depth interviews, participatory observations, and focus group discussions with religious leaders, government officials, and interfaith activists. Data collection was conducted in key regions with diverse religious populations, including Yogyakarta and Surabaya in Indonesia, as well as Kuala Lumpur and Selangor in Malaysia. Thematic analysis was used to identify patterns in religious moderation practices and their influence on interfaith harmony. The study finds that Malaysia’s religious moderation is actively supported by government policies, resulting in a more structured and dynamic interfaith environment. The National Unity Blueprint and other pluralism-oriented initiatives have contributed to stronger cooperation among religious communities. In contrast, Indonesia’s religious moderation efforts remain largely formal and symbolic, facing cultural resistance, particularly in rural areas. Limited local government support and socio-historical tensions further hinder effective interfaith engagement in Indonesia. The findings underscore the importance of government involvement in shaping interfaith harmony. The study suggests that Indonesia could benefit from adopting a more structured approach to religious moderation, integrating state-backed policies with grassroots engagement. The research also highlights the role of religious education and interfaith dialogue in reducing social tensions and fostering inclusive religious pluralism. This research contributes a novel comparative perspective on religious moderation by systematically analyzing policies and their social impact in two multicultural nations. Unlike previous studies that focus solely on qualitative descriptions, this study incorporates empirical insights into the effectiveness of religious moderation policies in fostering interfaith harmony. The findings provide valuable recommendations for policymakers and religious leaders in designing more effective pluralism strategies to enhance interfaith cooperation.

  • Jul 30, 2025
  • Journal Corner of Education, Linguistics, and Literature
  • Muhammad Syabani Ridwanulloh + 3 more

Religious moderation is a crucial discourse in addressing polarization and intolerance within pluralistic societies. This study systematically reviews scholarly works to examine the conceptual, practical, and policy-oriented intersections between religious moderation and multiculturalism. Employing a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) guided by PRISMA protocols, the research identified, screened, and analysed studies published from 2015 to 2025 across databases such as Scopus, Google Scholar, DOAJ, and Garuda. Inclusion criteria focused on peer-reviewed works addressing religious moderation, multicultural education, and social cohesion, while data extraction captured objectives, theoretical frameworks, methods, and findings. Thematic analysis was then applied to synthesise key patterns and gaps. The findings indicate that religious moderation, when contextualised through multicultural values, significantly enhances social integration, interfaith tolerance, and civic dialogue. Evidence suggests that its effectiveness is reinforced by educational frameworks, inclusive policy initiatives, and community-based empowerment strategies. Moreover, the analysis highlights that contextual adaptation to local culture and religious narratives is essential to ensure the acceptance and sustainability of moderation initiatives. This review concludes that embedding religious moderation within multicultural frameworks not only mitigates identity-based conflicts but also strengthens substantive democracy in diverse societies. It further underscores the necessity for policymakers, educators, and religious leaders to adopt participatory and culturally grounded strategies to promote moderation values. By mapping theoretical developments and empirical practices, this study contributes to advancing an integrative conceptual model that unites religious moderation and multiculturalism for fostering inclusive and harmonious societies.
