Religious Moderation in a Pluralistic World: A Global Bibliometric and Systematic Review (1988–2022) Across Faiths and Regions
This study investigates the development of scholarly discourse on religious moderation through a bibliometric analysis of international publications indexed in the Scopus database from 1988 to 2022. Employing VOSviewer for visualization and trend mapping, the research analyzes 390 publications, focusing on authorship, publication types, source journals, and keyword trends. The most significant surge in publications occurred in 2019, with articles (77.3%) representing the dominant document type. Notable contributors include Somer Murad and Zarzycka, with leading outputs from journals such as Religions and the Journal of Religion and Health. The United States, the United Kingdom, and Indonesia emerged as key publishing countries. Frequently occurring keywords—religion, moderation, and religiosity—highlight the thematic focus of the literature. Beyond quantitative metrics, the study critically reflects on the conceptual landscape of religious moderation, revealing a growing interdisciplinary engagement yet a lack of consensus on definitional boundaries. These findings offer valuable insights into the evolving scholarly understanding of religious moderation and its implications for pluralistic societies, policy discourse, and interfaith engagement. By linking bibliometric trends to broader theoretical and sociopolitical contexts, this research contributes to a more nuanced comprehension of the field’s intellectual structure and future directions.

This research analyzes Syarif Hidayatullah's da'wah (preaching) and politics using the concept of religious moderation. This research is a library research with main sources, archives, documents, books, journals, and other related works. The sources are obtained from searches on authoritative websites, such as Delpher, British Library, KITLV, and so on. By applying historical analysis, in the form of source criticism, interpretation and historiography, this research uses a biographical approach and leadership theory. This research shows that Syarif Hidayatullah as a scholar and umara has applied the principle of religious moderation in Cirebon Palace. The religious moderation applied by Syarif Hidayatullah is based on religion-based politics. Where, his political policy succeeded in controlling ritual issues, religious ceremonies, da’wah, and socio-politics. Thus, Syarif Hidayatullah not only succeeded as a politician who expanded the territory, but also succeeded in becoming a role model of religious leaders who prioritize the principle of wasathiyah (moderate). This study aims to examine the role of religious moderation in shaping interfaith relations in Indonesia and Malaysia. The research investigates how state policies and community-based initiatives contribute to social harmony and interfaith cooperation. It also seeks to identify the challenges each country faces in promoting religious moderation and its impact on Muslim-Christian interactions. The research employs a qualitative comparative approach, incorporating in-depth interviews, participatory observations, and focus group discussions with religious leaders, government officials, and interfaith activists. Data collection was conducted in key regions with diverse religious populations, including Yogyakarta and Surabaya in Indonesia, as well as Kuala Lumpur and Selangor in Malaysia. Thematic analysis was used to identify patterns in religious moderation practices and their influence on interfaith harmony. The study finds that Malaysia’s religious moderation is actively supported by government policies, resulting in a more structured and dynamic interfaith environment. The National Unity Blueprint and other pluralism-oriented initiatives have contributed to stronger cooperation among religious communities. In contrast, Indonesia’s religious moderation efforts remain largely formal and symbolic, facing cultural resistance, particularly in rural areas. Limited local government support and socio-historical tensions further hinder effective interfaith engagement in Indonesia. The findings underscore the importance of government involvement in shaping interfaith harmony. The study suggests that Indonesia could benefit from adopting a more structured approach to religious moderation, integrating state-backed policies with grassroots engagement. The research also highlights the role of religious education and interfaith dialogue in reducing social tensions and fostering inclusive religious pluralism. This research contributes a novel comparative perspective on religious moderation by systematically analyzing policies and their social impact in two multicultural nations. Unlike previous studies that focus solely on qualitative descriptions, this study incorporates empirical insights into the effectiveness of religious moderation policies in fostering interfaith harmony. The findings provide valuable recommendations for policymakers and religious leaders in designing more effective pluralism strategies to enhance interfaith cooperation.

This study explores religious moderation communication in fostering interreligious harmony in Bagansiapiapi, Rokan Hilir, Riau. It focuses on three aspects: (1) community understanding of religious moderation, (2) communication practices that support interfaith harmony, and (3) supporting and inhibiting factors in promoting religious coexistence. Using a qualitative approach, data were collected through field observation, interviews, and documentation involving religious leaders, community figures, local authorities, organizations, and multireligious communities. Findings reveal that religious moderation in Bagansiapiapi is deeply embedded in the local culture, with core values such as national commitment, tolerance, anti-violence, and acceptance of cultural diversity shaping daily interactions. Communication of religious moderation is practiced through inclusive and symbolic interactions based on Communication Accommodation Theory (CAT) and Symbolic Interactionism. Key enablers include inclusive cultural values, proactive community leadership, and empathy-driven communication. Challenges arise from the absence of permanent interfaith youth forums and limited institutional support. The novelty of this research lies in three contributions: (1) the formulation of a Cultural-Accommodative Communication Model, where symbolic convergence fosters organic interfaith engagement; (2) positioning religious moderation as a community-based collective identity rather than a top-down directive; and (3) demonstrating how religious and national symbols function as active instruments of moderation communication. These findings provide valuable insights for the development of sustainable religious harmony strategies in other multicultural settings.

Religious moderation remains highly relevant in Indonesia today, as intolerance and extremism continue to emerge and affect various sectors, including higher education and students as the younger generation. Interfaith dialogue is one of the approaches widely used to promote moderation; however, such initiatives are often incidental and have limited impact in transforming individuals from intolerance to tolerance, or from social exclusivism to social pluralism. This study aims to address these weaknesses by examining the transformation process of students who actively participate in interreligious student communities. In addition, it seeks to explore and propose the strategic role of Bible/Theological Colleges (B/TC) in Indonesia in supporting religious moderation efforts. Employing a qualitative approach through interviews, direct observation of interfaith student activities, and literature review, the research finds that sustainable interfaith communities are more effective than incidental dialogues in fostering openness, tolerance, and mutual respect among students of different faiths. The findings indicate that B/TC should not limit their role to serving Christian communities but must also contribute to the common good by collaborating with Islamic Religious Higher Education institutions in establishing long-term interfaith student communities. This study contributes by offering an alternative model of interfaith engagement that strengthens the effectiveness of religious moderation initiatives in Indonesia and provides practical insights for religious higher education institutions in promoting social harmony.

PurposeThere has been a great deal of exploratory, conceptual and empirical research on digital financial literacy (DFL) in the fields of finance, economics, business and management. But up until now, there has not been any attempt to provide a thorough scientific mapping of the area. Therefore, by combining various knowledge systems, this study seeks to identify the current research trend.Design/methodology/approachA sample of 158 papers was subjected to bibliometric analysis in the areas of DFL or digital finance. Assembling, organising and evaluating are the three phases that make up the bibliometric analysis process derived from the most dependable and genuine sources, the Scopus database, and the Web of Science (WoS) database. This study was done using a scientific search technique on the Scopus and WoS databases for the years 2015 through 2022. The study made use of Biblioshiny, a web-based tool created in R-studio and part of the Bibliometrix package. Prominent journals, authors, nations, articles and themes were identified with the use of the software's automated workflow. “Citation, co-citation, and social network analysis” were also carried out.FindingsThe study' outcomes indicate that, as an interdisciplinary discipline, the themes of digital finance have changed throughout time. Researchers first concentrated on socioeconomic and demographic variables, but over time the subject expanded to include themes like influencing, promoting, and behavioural factors that affect digital financial literacy (DFL). This research shows the conceptual framework of the area in addition to its intellectual and social structure. This study offers crucial insights into subjects that demand more research.Research limitations/implicationsSince the current study is a bibliometric analysis, the usual restrictions on such studies apply. A meta-analysis, a thorough literature review and other methods would be beneficial for future researchers to develop a solid conceptual framework. This current research work's science mapping is restricted to the Scopus and WoS databases because this research includes more high-quality articles and has organised formats that work with the Bibliometrix application.Practical implicationsPresent research provides critical insights into saving behaviour, retirement planning, digital finance and the interdependence of these. This research highlights the most prevalent problems in the field and points in the direction of potential areas for further study. Exposing the social and intellectual structure of the domain educates upcoming scholars about the themes, contexts and opportunities for collaboration in this field.Social implicationsThe study will be useful for future learning as the study gives broad exposure to the current literature in the field of digital finance. On the other hand, people will also grow aware of the effects of digital finance and make the proper choices as a result. Additionally, the report might offer crucial insights for developing policies on digital finance and literacy.Originality/valueIn the past, a significant number of conceptual and empirical studies were conducted internationally in the research fields of economics, finance, business, management and consumer behaviour. This research makes a significant addition by bringing together disparate literature in the field, highlighting reliable sources, authors and documents, and examining the relationship between digital finance, saving behaviour and retirement planning.

Halal tourism has grown rapidly over the past two decades, becoming a strategic pillar of the global industry. The expansion of the Muslim travel market, reaching millions of international arrivals annually, underscores the growing need for destinations, products, and services consistent with Islamic values. Therefore, this study aims to identify major themes and gaps in the halal tourism literature through a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) based on PRISMA guidelines. Using the keyword “halal tourism” in the Scopus database (2014–2025), a total of 659 articles were initially retrieved, with 31 fulfilling the final inclusion criteria after screening for access, language, and relevance. The results showed that Indonesia dominates halal tourism literature (28 articles), with case studies and surveys being the most common methods. Thematically, studies cluster into nine categories, namely Muslim tourist behavior and loyalty, policy and governance, branding and promotion, religious moderation and local wisdom, destination strategies, halal food consumption, technology and digitalization, literacy and social capital, as well as certification. Previous studies have largely focused on tourist behavior, while implementation and certification remain underexplored. In general, halal tourism is a multidimensional field integrating culture, governance, branding, and technology beyond mere compliance with Islamic law. Future studies should focus on practical implementation, certification systems, and digital transformation. Strengthening these areas will enhance competitiveness, ensure inclusivity for Muslim travelers, and support the sustainability of halal tourism as a driver of equitable growth in the global landscape.
