Teenagers are often influenced by various distractions, generational challenges, and differences in personality, which hinder their religious awareness, including for the teenagers at Masjid Telaga Zam-Zam Sidikalang. This study aims to understand how religious leaders use interpersonal communication to overcome these obstacles and enhance the religious awareness of teenagers. The research focuses on Masjid Telaga Zam-Zam Sidikalang in analyzing the interpersonal communication patterns of religious leaders, the obstacles faced, and the resulting impacts. This study uses a qualitative approach with data collection through in-depth interviews and direct observation. The informants consist of religious leaders and teenagers who are actively involved in religious activities at the mosque. The data obtained were analyzed using triangulation techniques with the data analysis approach of Miles and Huberman (1994), which includes data reduction, data display, and drawing conclusions. The findings of the study show that religious leaders use various interpersonal communication strategies, such as direct dialogue, providing good behavioral examples, group activities, and religious study sessions, to increase the religious awareness of teenagers. Despite the obstacles, such as distractions from social media and generational challenges, the interpersonal communication efforts successfully increased the teenagers' involvement in religious activities, strengthened emotional bonds, and encouraged positive changes in their attitudes and behavior. The implications of this study emphasize the importance of interpersonal communication in shaping teenagers' religious awareness, particularly in the mosque environment. This study contributes to the understanding of how religious leaders can utilize interpersonal communication to overcome challenges in guiding teenagers. Recommendations include the development of more adaptive and personal communication strategies to address the challenges faced by teenagers and to enhance their involvement in religious activities.

Religious and Non-religious Activity Engagement as Assets in Promoting Social Ties Throughout University: The Role of Emotion Regulation.
 • Oct 17, 2014
 • Journal of Youth and Adolescence
 • Thalia Semplonius + 2 more

Emerging adulthood is a time of many changes. For example, one change that occurs for a subset of emerging adults is leaving home and starting university. Importantly, the creation of social ties can aid in promoting positive adjustment during university. This study investigated whether involvement in religious activities promotes social ties among university students directly and/or indirectly through emotion regulation. Importantly, involvement in religious activities may promote self-regulatory skills, and the ability to effectively regulate emotions can aid in navigating social interactions. To rule out potentially important confounding variables, spirituality and involvement in non-religious clubs were statistically controlled in all analyses. The participants included 1,132 university students (70.5% female) from a university in Ontario, Canada who were surveyed each year over a period of 3years. The results indicated that involvement in religious activities indirectly predicted more social ties over time through emotion regulation. Spirituality did not predict social ties or emotion regulation. Furthermore, non-religious clubs directly predicted more social ties over time. Thus, although involvement in religious and non-religious activities both predicted more social ties in a university setting over time, the mechanism by which these activities promote social ties differed.

Online learning methodologies are the most influential factor in educational success. However, it cannot be denied that there are non-technical aspects that indirectly affect students' motivation and academic achievement after the Covid-19 pandemic occurred. This study involves paired t-tests, regression tests, and partial t-tests to analyze the factors that can indirectly shape student motivation and academic achievement in Indonesia's higher schools. The factors studied were related to economic condition, health, habits, and social interaction. The result shows significant changes in learning motivation, economic and health conditions, student interactions with friends and lecturers, student involvement in student activity units and religious activities, use of social media, and time spent reading. The Grade Point Accumulative (GPA) before the pandemic was influenced by learning motivation. However, during the pandemic, the GPA was not significantly affected by learning motivation. Before the pandemic, family engagement and student involvement in religious activities significantly influence the GPA. Meanwhile, the factors that influence learning motivation during the pandemic are student involvement in social activities, interaction with lecturers, health conditions, and time spent reading.

 • Larry A Hjelle

This study examined the hypothesis that self-actualization is negatively associated with reported frequency of active involvement in religious activities. A group of 63 male undergraduates enrolled in a Catholic coeducational institution indicated the extent of their involvement in religious activities and completed Shostrom's Personal Orientation Inventory (POI), a comprehensive measure of self-actualization. Results indicated substantial support for the hypothesis. Nine of the 12 Shostrom POI subscales were significantly correlated with the religious participation index in the predicted direction. It was suggested that self-actualizing students construe involvement in religious activities as being detrimental to thier psychosocial development.

In the smoke of the people’s opium: The influence of religious beliefs and activities on protest participation
 • May 1, 2021
 • International Sociology
 • Chan S Suh

How does religion shape individual decisions to participate in protests? On the one hand, past literature from Tocqueville’s perspective has suggested that people’s involvement in religious activities leads to engagement in civic activities. On the other hand, the Marxist approach has pointed to the possibility that one’s religious belief may rather lead to decreasing participation in civil society. Combining these two conflicting perspectives, this study examines the influence of religious beliefs and activities on protest participation, an increasingly important form of civic participation in contemporary times. Using the World Values Survey across 48 countries, the author’s findings provide support for the Marxist approach by suggesting that people’s religious beliefs are significantly and negatively associated with one’s participation in protests especially in non-Western religions. Additionally, while the results fail to support the Tocquevillian perspective that one’s religious activities are directly related to protest participation, religious activities do have a countervailing effect by minimizing the negative influence of religious beliefs people hold on protest participation. This study provides important implications to further our understanding on the paradoxical relationship between religion and civic participation.

The Direct and Indirect Effects of Mothers' and Adolescents' Family Cohesion on Young Adolescents' Attitudes Toward Substance Use
 • Jan 1, 2003
 • The Journal of Primary Prevention
 • Colleen Pilgrim + 2 more

This study examined the influence of parental, school, and peer bonding for rural youth making the transition into middle school. Survey data were collected from 225 adolescents and their mothers answering parallel items on family cohesion, school attachment, and attitudes toward substance use by minors. Adolescents also reported on social support from friends, and mothers reported on the family's involvement in religious activities. Using structural equation modeling, greater family cohesion at the start of middle school / junior high was directly and indirectly related to negative attitudes toward substance use by the adolescent one year later. Factors that mediated family cohesion were school and peer attachment, the family's involvement in religious activities, and the mothers' attitudes toward substance use by minors. Implications for prevention and recommendations for parents are discussed.

Association of Religious Activity with Male Suicide Deaths

 • Diego De La Vega Sánchez + 8 more

To analyze the relationship between suicide in men and stratified measures of religiosity. We studied 192 suicides and 81 controls (nonsuicide, sudden, or accidental death). We employed the psychological autopsy method to compile diagnoses based on DSM-IV criteria. Overall, religiosity and participation in religious associations were determined using a Likert-type scale. Given the limited participation of women in the religious associations of southern Spain, only male subjects were included. Religious participants had decreased risk of suicide compared to nonparticipants (OR=0.148, 95% CI=0.049-0.447). This lower risk was further associated with the degree of involvement in religious activity. Suicides accounted for 73.47% of subjects with no religious participation, 61.17% of those with some participation, and 56.52% of frequent participants (linear trend test Z=-2.0329, p=.042). Membership in a religious association was also associated with a lower rate of suicide compared to nonmembers (OR=0.356, 95% CI=0.172-0.736). This effect was similarly associated with the degree of involvement in the association. Suicides accounted for 74.67% of subjects who never participated in the activities of a religious association, 69.23% of those who sometimes participated, and 42.86% of frequent participants (linear trend test Z=-3.4082, p<.001). Religiosity, either as general participation or through a religious association, was associated with protection against suicide proportional to the degree of involvement in religious activities.

This study aims to analyze the management of Islamic Religious Education (PAI) learning for Children with Special Needs (ABK) at SLBN Autis North Sumatera, focusing on three main aspects, namely planning, implementation, and learning assessment. This research uses a qualitative approach with phenomenological methods. Data collection techniques were conducted through in-depth interviews, direct observation, and documentation studies, with informants consisting of Islamic Religious Education teachers, principals, and their deputies. All data obtained were analyzed using the analysis model of Miles and Huberman, which consists of three stages, namely data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The results showed that learning planning begins with an initial assessment to understand the characteristics of students, but the teaching modules prepared by Islamic Education teachers are still general and not fully individualized. Learning implementation is conducted twice a week, every Tuesday and Thursday, with a flexible and differentiative approach. Teachers use individual and small group strategies, as well as varied learning media such as pictures, videos, and Islamic songs. Teaching and learning activities are also supported by regular principal supervision. Learning assessment is carried out adaptively through written, oral, practical methods, attitude observation, and student involvement in religious activities. However, teachers still face challenges in assessing.

Islamic boarding schools are Islamic institutions that help and develop students from a religious perspective which includes character formation. One of the success factors in forming the character of students in Islamic boarding schools is the role of a teacher. A teacher must be able to communicate well with students by prioritizing student discipline and politeness. One of the communications carried out in developing students is interpersonal communication. This research aims to find out how teachers' interpersonal communication approaches and strategies shape the character of Islamic boarding school students in Indonesia. This research uses a qualitative method with a case study type. Data sources were taken from ten informants through direct interviews using a set of interview protocols. The informants consisted of teachers at Islamic boarding schools and students. All interview data obtained was analyzed thematically using the Milles & Hubberman Interactive Analysis Model technique. Research findings found three identification approaches and two interpersonal communication strategies used by teachers in forming students' characters. The three identification approaches are the cultural approach, the sociological approach, and the psychological approach. The two strategies used by the teacher are punishment and catalyst strategies. This research has revealed teachers' interpersonal communication approaches and strategies in shaping the character of Islamic boarding school students in Indonesia. Apart from that, the results of this research can be used as a reference for anyone who wants to manage an educational institution in the form of an Islamic boarding school.

This study examines the relationship between hijab usage and religiosity among female students at the Institut Ahmad Dahlan (IAD) Probolinggo. It aims to explore the correlation between wearing the hijab and various aspects of religious behavior, including worship practices, understanding of religious values, and social interactions. Employing a qualitative approach with a descriptive phenomenological design, data were collected through in-depth interviews, participant observation, and social media documentation involving students from various academic programs and hijab styles (square hijab, pashmina, and khimar). Informants were purposively selected based on their consistent hijab-wearing behavior, involvement in religious activities, and active presence on social media. The findings indicate that the hijab serves not only as a symbol of Islamic identity but also as an indicator of religiosity. Khimar users, typically from religious family backgrounds and pesantren education, demonstrated greater consistency in religious practices and understanding. In contrast, pashmina and square hijab users tended to be more responsive to social media trends while maintaining modesty. Religious education—particularly within the Islamic Education Department—played a significant role in strengthening religious commitment and influencing the choice of shari'a-compliant hijab styles. Social media also contributed to shaping Islamic identity through da'wah content and Muslim fashion trends. This study concludes that hijab style reflects a complex interaction between social norms, religious values, and individual agency. Islamic identity is dynamically constructed through the internalization of values and the influence of socio-cultural environments.
