Abstract

Any discussion on the relationship between religion and politics in Italy must still today include an analysis of the dynamics existing between the world of politics and the catholic religion due to the preeminent role it has long held in the country. In an increasingly open and pluralistic society traditional reference points are weakened, a mix of cultures emerges, and the importance of memory and roots dwindles. The recourse of weakened politics to the religious symbolic patrimony, however, is not particular to the Italian case, since it occurs in various other European countries. Passing from the level of principles to real processes, it can be seen that the three factions of political Catholicism do not disappear in the Italian two-party world that emerged after the collapse of the Christian Democrats (CD) and the crisis of the First Republic, but rather remain latent. Keywords: Catholic church; Christian Democrats (CD); Italian case; pluralistic society
