Abstract

The dynamic evolution of a collisionless current sheet which is initially not in equilibrium is investigated by means of a one-dimensional electromagnetic implicit particle simulation code. In general a relaxation of a collisionless system into an exact equilibrium is not possible, although on macroscopic scales an equilibrium can be reached. The macroscopic view is inherently included in observations as well as in a particle simulation. Our simulation results show a filamentation of the distribution function in phase space. Macroscopic quantities such as kinetic energy exhibit an oscillation which is damped on Alfvèn time scales.
