Abstract
Relaxation of Hg(6 3P 0) by NH 3 was shown to occur in bimolecular encounters, and also in termolecular encounters with an inert gas. M. viz. Hg(6 3P 0) + NH 2 + M å HgNH + 3 + M. The principal fate of the HgNH + 3 is the spontaneous emission of radiation. The bimolecular and termolecular rate coefficients were measured at 295°K, with M = N 2, Ar and He, Quantum yields. Φ, for the formation of Hg(6 3P 0) and rate coefficients for deactivation were recorded in H 2, NO, CO, CO 2, N 2O, O 2, C 2H 4, C 2H 6, C 3H 8, NH 3 and H 2O (Φ only).
