Abstract

The calculation of the nuclear magnetic double resonance spectra and the determination of relative signs of coupling constants for nuclear spin systems of the general A m K n ⋯ X r type can be based on a graphical procedure in which “frequency-sweep” transitions are plotted as a function of the frequency of the strong radio-frequency field. This method permits a straight-forward interpretation of the comparatively complicated spectra which arise at intermediate values of the second radio-frequency field on sweeping the magnetic field. The analysis of the “field-sweep” H 1{F 19} nuclear magnetic double resonance spectra shows that J CH 3H and J HF are of the same sign in CH 3CHF 2 and CH 3CH 2F, while J HF (trans) and J FF (trans) are of opposite sign in CF 2CHF.
