Abstract
The prevalence of dementia is increasing among Korean elderly. Our study has shown that toenail Zn level is decreased especially in cognitively impaired elderly. But studies on nutritional or metabolic problems among Korean elderly in regard to cognitive function are rarely reported, although chronic degenerative risk factors such as insulin resistance, hypertension, central obesity, and sarcopenia can increase the risk of cardiovascular disease. This study was aimed to find out the associated metabolic risk factors with cognitive function in elderly. The elderly with age over 55y from clinic, church, health center around Seoul and Keugngido in Korea were recruited. The serum Zn, blood pressure, WHR, insulin, HOMA_IR, fat‐free mass levels of patients with MCI or dementia were compared to those of general elderly without cognitive impairment. The serum Zn content was analyzed using INAA with a Korean research reactor. The KMMSE score of men was associated with age, serum LDL‐cholesterol, systolic blood pressure, serum Zn. In women, the KMMSE score was associated with age, body fat%, fat‐free mass, WHR, systolic blood pressure. This study showed the different metabolic risk factors were associated with cognitive function in male and female Korean elderly
