Abstract

1. 1. The lipids of the head and blubber oils of a sperm whale and of a giant squid removed from its stomach contained 84, 79 and 49 per cent wax esters, respectively. Triglycerides comprised 16, 21 and 26 per cent. 2. 2. The fatty acids and alcohols which were components of the squid lipids were also found in the whale lipids, but many were selectively located in either head or blubber oil. 3. 3. The sperm whale probably derives all of its fatty alcohol and much of its fatty acid from the diet.
