Abstract

Abstract Three women with pre-existing levels of rubella haemagglutination-inhibition antibody developed significant rises in titre after exposure to rubella during early pregnancy. The titration of antibody in serum fractions obtained after sucrose density-gradient ultracentrifugation showed that the rise in titre was only in the IgG fraction—a response characteristic of a secondary immune response. At birth the three infants were normal and had no clinical or serological evidence of congenital rubella. When a significant increase in antibody titre is observed, it is important to identify the type of antibody response before deciding to perform a therapeutic abortion.
