Regulatory force of digital court technologies: blurred boundaries between court administration and judicial discretion
ABSTRACT Digital technologies immersed into legal processes affect and modify the process. The inclusion and effects of digital technologies incorporated into legal processes are hard to catch due to the context specificity of the technology and the law. Therefore, contextual research on the practical legal effects of technology is warranted. In this article, I engage in qualitative legal research on the effects of digital technology infused into the work processes of Finnish district court judges. I examine how the regulatory force of digital technology manifests in practice by operationalising it in technological terms and conducting a case study of Finnish district courts’ digital work environment, AIPA. I argue that such large-scale digitalisation projects do not merely make administrative changes but instead affect the everyday exercise of justice, including the use of judicial power. The digital court technology, as legal technology, cannot be assessed separately from its fundamental context.

Smart manufacturing concepts merge modern production machinery and digital technologies in Cyber-Physical Production Systems (CPPS). CPPS consist of intelligent, real-time-capable, networked sensors and actuators. Operation of such advanced machinery requires substantial employees' skills in various qualification phases. This holds true for different industries, such as the German textile industry. An important measure that is intertwined with the implementation of advanced manufacturing concepts in textile production is supporting employees in their development of skills concerning smart manufacturing concepts. For this purpose, the development of Augmented reality (AR)-based assistance systems in connection with up-to-date textile machinery is regarded as a promising step towards the successful implementation of adequate, user-adaptable digital working environments in the textile industry. As the implementation of such assisted digital working environments in industrial organizations poses challenges, they might most adequately be addressed by adhering to standardized implementation procedures.

Against the backdrop of the rapid development of information technology, the digital environment has become a distinctive feature of modern society. The purpose of this paper is to explore the evolution of interpersonal interactions and their challenges in digital work environments, and to propose corresponding coping strategies. It is found that while the digital work environment enhances interpersonal connections, promotes teamwork, and expands social networks, it also brings about problems such as interpersonal alienation, lack of trust, social barriers, hierarchical relationships, and increased competition in the workplace. Based on this, this paper proposes coping strategies at both the organizational and individual levels, including organizing offline activities and optimizing the use of tools, as well as improving digital literacy and maintaining work-life boundaries for individuals. Improving interpersonal relationships in digital work environments is important for promoting organizational development, meeting people's needs for a better life, and building a harmonious society.

Today’s organizations increasingly implement enterprise social media platforms to provide a digital work environment. Hereby, organizations expect various benefits, such as improved employee performance. In our research, we aim at uncovering how the introduction of enterprise social media platforms can support creating a digital work environment and how this digital work environment can influence an employee’s performance. To answer these research questions, we perform a survey-based investigation among 247 employees of an international financial corporation headquartered in Germany. For our investigation, we conceptualize that a digital work environment must consist of a task and a social dimension. Our findings show that enterprise social media platforms address both work environment dimensions by enabling collaboration, as well as networking among employees. We also find that employees who collaborate and network via enterprise social media platforms, increase their work performance by becoming more efficient and also more innovative. We find that networking’s impact on an employee’s innovativeness is significantly stronger than that of collaboration. Finally, we show that our research contributes to the literature by, for example, shedding light to the relationship between ESM use and employee performance. Furthermore, by showcasing the relevant ESM platform functionalities that influence the collaboration and networking impacts, we provide insights to the actual IT artifact. Building on this, our study also yields various practical implications, such as proving which of the ESM functionalities are essential when increasing the employees’ collaboration and networking, and ultimately increasing their performance.

Maintaining performance in digital ubiquitous work environment is increasingly dependent on the quality of physical, cognitive and organizational ergonomics of work. Since digital work environment is the reign of most knowledge workers, there is a need to elaborate the study of work ergonomics by devoting attention to the issue of information ergonomics. In health care digitalisation has affected operation model thoroughly. It has affected how information is recorded, managed and distributed. Novel service models powered by digital channels offer now ways to practice professions as well as there are several outcomes regarding the whole service area. This paper is a summary of four research projects on how digitalisation affects knowledge work and how working is (re)shaped by sociotechnical work environments with reflection to eHealth. The conclusion in the paper underlines the digital transformation shaping the lives of knowledge workers. Discussion on how sociotechnical reshapes both individual and organisations, not to mention extended organisations. As the working practices as well as conventions and norms dictate the daily flow people have developed digital coping strategies. Paper also discusses the future of information ergonomics research in health care as way to find normative result for enhancing work in sociotechnical environment.

Purpose – This study examines the influence of digital employee competency and digital work environment on job performance among employees at Hisense Home Appliances Group, China, a manufacturing enterprise undergoing intensive digital transformation. Methodology – A quantitative research approach was employed with 400 employees selected through purposive sampling from multiple organizational departments. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire measuring digital employee competency (five dimensions), digital work environment (three dimensions), and job performance. Multiple regression analysis was conducted to test the hypothesized relationships. Results – Both digital employee competency and digital work environment significantly influence job performance. Among competency dimensions, ethics, technical proficiency, and continuous learning demonstrated significant positive effects, while cybersecurity awareness and troubleshooting showed non-significant relationships. All three digital work environment dimensions—psychological, sociological, and physical environments—significantly predicted job performance, with psychological environment emerging as the strongest predictor. Implications – Organizations should prioritize creating supportive digital work environments alongside developing employee competencies. Investments in psychological well-being, collaborative relationships, and technological infrastructure complement competency development initiatives in driving performance during digital transformation. Originality/Value – This study demonstrates that environmental factors exert stronger influences on job performance than individual competencies, challenging traditional human resource development paradigms and providing empirical evidence from the Chinese manufacturing sector.

Performance is an organizational achievement that can be a benchmark for whether work is carried out as planned or even exceeds what has been determined. This research aims to provide empirical evidence about how Work Discipline mediates between Ethical Leadership and the Digital Work Environment on Employee Performance. The respondents of this research were employees at state-owned companies in Cilacap, Indonesia using a sampling technique, namely purposive sampling. Using a quantitative approach, primary data was obtained from the results of a closed questionnaire distribution with seven Likert scales. Hypothesis testing uses the SEM-AMOS software analysis tool. This research provides different results from previous studies in that Ethical Leadership does not affect Employee Performance. One of the seven hypotheses was found to be false. Hence, employee performance is positively impacted by the Digital Work Environment, as demonstrated empirically by this study. This study additionally presents evidence that Work Discipline can act as a mediator for the impact of Ethical Leadership and Digital Work Environment on Employee Performance. This study presents empirical results that enhance the understanding of the relationship between the variables under consideration.

An architecture of a prototype digital work environment (DWE), designed to lead users of an academic community to the required information resources based on their tasks, is proposed. The important aspects of the DWE include the identification of information resources available in the academic environment, the various categories of users and the tasks associated with each category of users. Digital information resources include full-text articles, databases, theses and dissertations, e-journals, e-books, multimedia databases, etc. Other information resources, e.g. university course calendars, university statutes, course registration information, thesis and dissertation guidelines, style guides, etc, are also needed by users of an academic community. As these information resources are spread across different servers and in different home pages, academic users find it difficult to obtain the needed information for their work in a desired format at the right time. A prototype DWE has been designed using the School of Computer Engineering at Nanyang Technological University as an example of such an environment. The DWE provides links to various information resources according to users’ needs, as well as a personal workspace to record/store the user’s publications, frequently used or favourite hyperlinks and references or notes. Various stages of the prototype design and development are described and future work on DWE are highlighted.

The transformation of reward systems in the digital work era has become a strategic issue in human resource management. Reward systems are crucial not only as tools of appreciation but also as key mechanisms for building motivation, emotional attachment, and employee loyalty, which ultimately impact organizational performance improvement. This study aims to analyze the contribution of reward systems, both intrinsic and extrinsic to enhance employee engagement in digital platform-based work. Using a literature review method with a descriptive qualitative approach, data collection was conducted through systematic searches and in-depth analysis of relevant scientific literature from journals, books, and trusted articles published. This review examines the forms of rewards, their effectiveness, digital transformation, as well as mediating and moderating factors that influence employee engagement. The findings indicate that fair, personalized, and technology-based rewards significantly increase motivation, loyalty, and employees’ emotional attachment. Digitalization enables reward systems to become more adaptive and relevant to the needs of modern workers. The implications of this study emphasize the importance of a humanistic and contextual HR management strategy to address the challenges of a flexible and digitalized work environment.

The article systematized regulatory documents that characterize the need for transformation processes in education, which include updating the knowledge system and the need for adapting the teacher of higher education institutions to changes in interpersonal interaction with the use of digital technologies. The notions of "digital environment", "digital technologies", "digitalization" are disclosed. It was clarified that there was no single approach to the definition of "digital technologies" in scientific circles and national legislative documents. The peculiarities of the digital technologies implementation created by the local network of higher educational institutions through the module of administration and adjustment of the users rights, which ensures the implementation of participants activities in the educational process without territorial, geographical, time constraints, are described. The essential characteristics of educational tasks and digital technologies used for their representation are described that allows a teacher to create conditions for active student learning activities in the educational electronic environment. Possibilities of updating forms of interpersonal interaction in the context of educational tasks are generalized. The digital technologies providing feedback are characterized, in particular, through the final and formative assessment. There are three criteria for selection of digital means and technologies: provision of interactive information interaction in the learning process; adaptation to the individual characteristics of students; possibility of synchronous or asynchronous interaction of an educational activity participants. The effectiveness of using digital technologies in the educational process of the higher institution education has been revealed according to the survey of students and teachers. It is revealed that the efficiency of digital technologies' use depends and is determined by a higher educational institution teacher’s readiness for this process .

The article analyzes key factors of introduction and realization of digital marketing technologies into economic activity of business entities. The relevance of research is determined by the fact that in the modern world digital technologies are one of the decisive factors of successful promotion in practically any sphere of economy, entrepreneurship and business. It has been established that marketing in the field of entrepreneurial activity will experience the greatest transformation under the influence of processes of digitalization. It is pointed out that at present time, the development of the latest technologies has led to the emergence of an innovative type of marketing activity – digital marketing. It is noted that digital technologies transform the functions of marketing activity of entrepreneurial entities, providing new possibilities of personalization and individual configuration of marketing programs. The basic prerequisites that determine the possibility and necessity of technological development of marketing policy of entrepreneurial structures in the digital environment have been identified. Key trends of economic activity of entrepreneurial entities that needs to introduce digital marketing technologies are identified. Factors of development of marketing digital technologies have been established. The marketing policy tools and technological solutions, the exploitation of which, will improve marketing activity of entrepreneurial subjects, are specified. The advantages of using digital marketing technologies by entrepreneurial entities are outlined. It is stated that digital marketing technologies are used for the purpose of coordination of efforts of the entrepreneurial entity to achieve strategic and operational goals. The exploitation of digital marketing technologies involves taking into account market requirements and ensuring interaction with clients and business partners through the transfer of information about goods and services, as well as receiving, processing and analysis of marketing information. It is summarized that the application of marketing digital technologies in economic activity of the entrepreneurial entities will provide them with growth of sales of products and services inside the country and will facilitate access to international markets.

In the context of the digitalization of the economy, fundamentally new approaches are required in the training of engineers based on the capabilities of both modern digital technologies and the digital environment. The modern volume and quality of digital technologies create conditions for the development of new ways of their use in education, as well as the application of world experience in innovative solutions in the field of digitalization of education. One of the key peculiarities of open education is the widespread use of modern digital technologies in the learning process, open educational resources (OER), massive open online courses (MOOCs). There are two trends in the implementation of the concept of open education. The first trend is to use the advantages of OER and MOOCs to maximize access to the world’s highest quality educational services. To solve this problem, it is necessary to develop methods for the use of OER materials in education. The second trend is to create conditions for the design and constant updating of the personal educational environment of teachers and students based on modern digital tools. The use of OER and online learning technologies in the educational process have not become widespread yet. In fact, there is not enough attention which is paid to methodological support for the integration of both educational and digital technologies. These problems can be solved using blended learning technology, which allows combining the advantages of digital and pedagogical technologies, overcoming their disadvantages. Thus depending on the tools used in the digital educational environment, the nature of their application in the educational process, as well as on the degree of restructuring of the educational process, various options for the design and organization of blended learning can be developed. The obtained results of the study allowed us to propose the following recommendations: conducting an information campaign to reveal the prospects, advantages, strategies in the use of OER and MOOCs in higher education; creation of conditions for the development of innovative approaches to the use of digital technologies, the creation of methodological support for blended learning models, the processes of integrating both educational and digital technologies; for the continuous development and renewal of the competencies of teachers and students in the field of using digital resources.KeywordsIntegration of digital and pedagogical technologiesBlended learningOnline trainingMassive open online-courses

Background In digital health services, including services for older people, video consultations can enhance access to care while enabling interaction through audio and visual means. Registered nurses are pivotal in digital care delivery and there is a need for more understanding regarding the use of video consultations in nursing. This study aims to examine factors associated with nurses’ video consultations in the public sector. Methods The Finnish ‘Survey on information systems for registered nurses’ was delivered for registered nurses in March 2023. The respondents were asked whether their work had included video consultations in the past six months. Binary logistic regression was used to examine if career stage and digital skills (basic IT-skills, proficiency in data security, skills in digital working environments) were associated with nurses’ video consultations, adjusted for working unit and location of employment. Results The study included 2,525 public sector nurses (92.7% female, mean age 47.34, SD 10.47). Of them, twelve percent had used video consultations with patients. Most nurses used video consultations in outpatient units (63.3%), whereas they were less used among those working in acute care (3.3%), housing services (3.3%) and home-based services (8.2%). Early-career nurses had lower odds (OR .38, 95% CI .19-.73) of video consultations compared to mid-career nurses. Nurses who had good skills in working in digital environments (OR 2.07, 95% CI 1.26-3.39) had greater odds of video consultations than those with poorer skills. Conclusions The study suggests a limited adoption of video consultations among public sector nurses, particularly among early-career professionals. Increasing targeted support and training, and the availability of tools for various patient service needs in video consultations, are needed. By recognizing the importance of nurses’ digital skills, digital care delivery could be enhanced and potential public health benefits promoted. Key messages • Relatively few registered nurses used video consultations in the public sector. More research is needed to explore if their usage could be increased safely for patients, also in early nursing careers. • Proficiency in digital work environments is imperative for ensuring the quality of care in video consultations. Therefore, collaborative efforts are required to enhance professionals’ digital skills.

Digital technologies, although enhancing productivity and communication, also contribute to technostress at work. This study addresses the fragmentation in existing models of hindrance technostressors by proposing a unified hierarchical model of digital hindrance stressors tailored to contemporary digital work environments. The research synthesizes various existing models and uses a mixed-methods approach, including a qualitative prestudy and extensive surveys with more than 5,800 participants to identify and validate 12 first-order and 5 second-order digital hindrance stressors. The new model offers both detailed and streamlined measurement tools, enhancing its applicability in diverse organizational contexts. For practitioners and policymakers, this study provides a comprehensive framework to assess and mitigate the adverse impacts of digital stressors. The unified model allows organizations to understand specific stressors their employees face and implement targeted interventions to improve well-being and productivity. By using this model, occupational health professionals can better address the psychological and physical health implications of technostress. Moreover, the findings offer actionable insights for designing digital work environments that minimize stress and foster a healthier, more productive workforce. This research bridges the gap between theoretical technostress models and practical applications, guiding effective strategies for managing digital workplace stress.
