Abstract

The importance of the role of healthcare support worker (HCSW) is now being recognized in terms of workforce planning. However, as roles emerge and responsibility increases, patient safety and care is paramount and must not be compromised. Regulation would bring with it standards for HCSWs, protection for patients and staff, and some value to this vital role for the future of healthcare in the UK. It is important to keep up to date with this issue as it will move on quickly in the near future. The next issue of the Journal will include an article on the argument against regulation.
