Abstract

The singularities of 't Hooft's N-instanton solution obscure its topological properties. It is shown that these singularities may be displaced and in fact removed to infinity by suitable singular gauge transformations. In this new regular representation, the winding number of the field can be defined following the BPST prescription. The example of two instantons is discussed in detail.
