Abstract
This study registers the occurrence of a rufous hornero (Furnarius rufus, Passeriformes, Furnariidae) nest built directly on the soil, during the spring of 2019 (October and November) in southern Brazil (Rio Grande do Sul). Both unfinished and finished nests were found on an exposed soil fragment after the removal of the original grassland vegetation. Over the study period, two adult individuals were observed leaving one of the nests, which were later destroyed by agricultural activities in the region. Rufous horneros nests built directly on the soil are a rare occurrence. Our results indicate a search for appropriate nesting sites by the monitored individuals despite intensive anthropic activities in the studied area.
