Abstract

The Pennisetum glaucum [P. americanum] germplasm accessions ICML 17, 18, 19, 20 and 21 (PI537582 to PI537586), selected from bulk germplasm obtained from Nigeria, USA, Mali, India and Cameroon, respectively, showed high levels of resistance to Puccinia penniseti rust in multilocational trials in India during 1977-83 (0-13% mean rust severity vs. 25-63% for susceptible standards). The accessions were evaluated in a Sclerospora graminicola nursery at Patancheru during 3 postrainy seasons (1985-87); only disease-free plants were sibbed in order to improve resistance to that pathogen as well. At Patancheru the accessions were 1-2 m tall, flowered 50-60 days after sowing, produced 2-5 tillers/plant and had panicles 15-30 cm in length
