Regenerative Approach for Solid Waste Management in Historic Centres

Publication Date Jun 17, 2022

Solid waste management is considered one of the greatest challenges faced by historic centres due to the nature of their urban fabric and the changing frequency of users of the area, resulting in variability in the amount and composition of solid waste produced. Although historic centres are places where the Genius Loci of cities are appreciated, the implications of poor solid waste management led to the deterioration of these significant places. The application of holistic strategies contributes to keeping the urban identity alive while considering current social and economic aspects. This chapter focuses on exploring the potential of using the urban regeneration framework for solid waste management in historic centres. The discourse begins by defining the conceptual framework, followed by reflections on the historic centres of Naples and Cairo to explore how regenerative approaches can be used. Finally, the findings suggest a possible regenerative framework that could be used by different groups to solve problems with waste management in historic cities.
