Abstract

Objective To investigate the regeneration of interstitial cells of Cajal (ICC) and the gastric emptying in rats undergoing pylorectomy and Roux-en-Y gastrojejunostomy. Methods Twenty male SD rats were divided into two groups randomly:the experimental group and the control group. The experimental group consisted of 10 rats undergoing pylorectomy and Roux-en-Y gastrojejunostomy, and the control group only underwent pyloric transection and anastomosis.Gastric scintigraphy was performed on the two groups respectively to measure the gastric half emptying time (t1/2) at 4th week after the surgical manipulations, and the regeneration of ICC was observed by the scanning electron microscopy. Results The gastric emptying in the experimental group showed a significant delay as compared with that in the control group at 4th week after the surgical manipulations [(23.5 ±4.5) min vs.(10.2 ±2.3) min,P <0.01],accompanied with the regeneration of ICC.Conclusion The regeneration of ICC near the gastrojejunal anastomosis may be one of the most important reasons making a significant delay on the gastric emptying.
