Abstract

This paper describes the insights and reflections of Dr. M. Rashad Massoud in directing the USAID Applying Science to Strengthen and Improve Systems (ASSIST) Project and the USAID Health Care Improvement (HCI) Project. These reflections come from his experience in managing global, multi-country, multi-site activities with the objective of improving health care in low-and middle-income countries and addressing global health priorities. In this paper, the key points described are an overview of ASSIST and HCI; activity development under the projects; how to manage a global project to achieve results; how to manage relationships with USAID and host country governments in these projects; how to monitor and measure results; and how to learn from project results to develop and implement the agenda for global technical leadership.
