Abstract

North Wales, in the UK, is a popular scenic location for retirement. An above-average concentration of nursing homes leads to a high number of residents with palliative care needs. UK nursing homes are usually privately owned and provide nursing care for elderly clients unable to maintain independence in their own home. Increasingly, nursing home residents are being referred to as ‘patients’ rather than ‘clients’, reflecting the fact that individuals are being admitted in a more acute phase of their illness. The length of stay is now often days or weeks rather than months or years.
