Abstract

Reconsidering the evidence of association and stratigraphy in Uhle’s early twentieth-century excavations in coastal Peru caused me to re-date the ceramics assigned by Menzel to Middle Horizon 3 and 4 to either Middle Horizon 2B or Late Intermediate Period 1-2. Cross-dating to link geographically separated sites in time both clarifies the impact of Huari on many local styles and identifies the beginning of the Late Intermediate Period in places other than Ica. Ica, Ancon, and Pachacamac are considered here; Supe and points north will be considered in Part 2, in a future issue.
