Abstract

The sayings of Jesus form a very substantial part of the Gospel tradition. The sayings of Jesus can be studied from perspectives other than the traditional. One of these perspectives, namely that the sayings are part of a particular text-type, deserves our attention. This chapter analyzes some of the implications of the redaction and contextualization of the sayings of Jesus in the Gospels. Contextualization refers to the situational context within a text and the world of reference of a literary unit. Every component of a text is contextualized within the complete text. The thesis of the chapter is that the author of the Gospel of Mark used the sayings of Jesus as a literary means to put across a narrative point of view and as a form of characterization. The chapter first discusses the problems in connection with redaction and contextualization. It then focuses on Mark 14:61-62.
