Abstract

Abstract Whereas language leaves no material trace, collective ritual—with its formal characteristics of amplified, stereotypical, redundant display— might be expected to leave a loud archeological signature. Does the archeological record of ochre use provide such a signature, and can it indirectly contribute to our understanding of the evolution of language? I begin by highlighting the formal differences between language and ritual as modes of communication.
