Abstract

The cost and the reliability of a transoceanic link depend widely on the number of line repeaters. The concept of inline remote pumping can be an interesting new solution to reduce its number. To demonstrate its feasibility, we have performed a 20-Gb/s soliton transmission over transoceanic distance and have succeeded in increasing the in-line active-units span up to a record distance of 200 km. Therefore, this experiment shows that soliton transmission permits both high data rates and repeater spans thanks to the use of the in-line regenerative control and the new in-line remote pumping techniques.
