Abstract

Orange-red (or) is a recessive autosomal mutation, affecting eye color in the Mediterranean fruit fly. It is linked to the white-pupae (w) locus and is 44.8 to 52.1 map units apart in females. Recombination between the or and w loci occurs in males with a normal chromosomal complement. The recombination level is 0.4 to 1.05% in the males. The relevance of genetic recombination to automated sexing is discussed. Genetic recombination in males may affect the integrity of strains carrying a Y-autosome translocation which has been induced for automated sexing of mass-reared flies.
