Abstract

Schizophrenia is a serious illness and one of the most expensive psychiatric disorders.It is anticipated that the number and proportion of older patients with schizophrenia will continue to increase. By 2025, it is anticipated that patients 55 and older with schizophrenia will comprise 25% of all patients with schizophrenia. This research symposium will include papers by investigators from various sites which present and discuss recent research in older patients with schizophrenia. Dr. Kasckow will serve as chair. The topics will range from research studies examining recent longitudinal data on outcome with respect to remission, community integration, cognition, depression and health; research examining the feasibility and potential effectiveness of using ecological momentary assessments with older adults with schizophrenia and other serious mental illnesses to allow clinicians to recognize early signs of of psychiatric distress; research examining inflammatory biomarkers in older patients with schizophrenia; and a review of the evidence base for psychopharmacologic treatment of older adults with schizophrenia. Dr. Carl Cohen will serve as the symposium discussant and will relate these findings towards treating this population. This session will important new advances in research pertaining to older patients with schizophrenia.
