Abstract

Any assessment of the Report from Ontario’s Special Committee for the Arts, also known as the Macaulay Report, must look beyond style and even substance; and beyond the controversial creation of the Macaulay Committee, and the generally favourable reception the report has received thus far. The ultimate value that the report will have lies in its effect on the artists of Ontario. After all, this was the Special Committee for the Arts; the report’s impact should therefore be seen primarily in terms of the arts and artists, as well as in terms of economics, technology, audience appreciation, education, and general cultural development. It is essential that readers – artists, audience members, arts administrators, educators, politicians, and others – focus on the recommendations that directly affect the artist and the creative process.
