Abstract
Tetrasulphur tetranitride reacts with thionyl chloride in the presence of ferric or aluminium chloride to give a mixture of the tetrachlorometallates (MCl4–, M = Fe or Al) of the cations S3N2Cl+, S4N3+, and the new species S5N5+; their i.r. spectra are discussed. These three cations appear to be members of a potentially large class of inorganic aromatic SN species.
