Abstract

Abstract The vapor-phase aldol condensation of methyl propionate with formaldehyde was performed using methylal as the source of formaldehyde. The main products were methyl methacrylate and methacrylic acid. The one-pass yield of methyl methacryalte plus methacrylic acid on methylal basis reached 53 mol% at a methyl propionate/methylal molar ratio of 2 over the V–Si–P oxide with an atomic ratio of 1:16: 3.2.
