Abstract

This study of the “Christmas play” preserved by the Codex Buranus (Munich, Bavarian State Library clm. 4660) examines its place in the culture of the Augustinian order of regular canons at Neustift (Novacella), near to Brixen (Bressanone), in South Tyrol, probing the use of Jewish stereotypes, the limits of secular scholarship, and the nature of religious knowledge.
