Abstract

In P Farcas and colleagues' report1 electrophysiological studies were consistent with early axonal degeneration in two patients, one of whom showed inexcitable nerves 15 days after admission. These workers believe that favourable response to a second course of IVIg, given between days 14 and 21, is especially striking in patients with adverse prognostic features such as early axonal damage. However, more than half of GBS patients with early inexcitability of motor nerves receiving standard plasmapheresis or IVIg may have full recovery at 1 year.
