Abstract

A rate-distortion based quantisation level adjustment algorithm is presented for H.264. Based on rate-distortion criterion, the quantisation level adjustment algorithm effectively improves quantisation performance by adaptively optimising quantisation levels of the signals near the boundaries of quantisation cells. Experimental results show that it can improve peak signal-to-noise ratios by up to 0.9 dB at high bit rates.
