Abstract

We present results of a micro-Raman study of well characterized by X-rays powder diffraction (XPD) and a.c. magnetic susceptibility samples of YBa 2(Cu 1−xFe x) 4O 8 (0≤×≤0.06). Employing that Cu at both the Cu1 and Cu2 sites is involved in Raman active modes, we show that Fe substitutes for Cu at the Cu1 site. Although the XPD data analysis reveals orthorombic-to-tetragonal transition for x≥0.04, a Raman scattering evidence is given that the material remains orthorhombic at micro-level even for high x.
