Abstract
Usually only limited real-time information is available regarding the nature of tissues during diagnostic and therapeutic surgical procedures. As a result, sampling errors occur during diagnostic biopsies due to tumor heterogeneity and incomplete tumor removal during tumor resection procedures. Moreover, damage to healthy tissues tends to occur. Identification of the biochemical characteristics of healthy and diseased tissues and the use of these characteristics to guide surgical procedures might be a way to improve their diagnostic and therapeutic accuracy and their safety.
