Abstract
NE of the most typical and pronounced arid areas in North America extends through southwestern Arizona, southeastern California, and northwestern Sonora, embracing also both shores of the Gulf of California almost to Cape San Lucas. Precipitation varies from an annual average of about io inches in the more elevated plateau regions to less than 2 inches at sea level. Isolated mountain ranges may receive as much as 40 inches upon their summits but without affecting the general aridity of the region.
