Abstract

Radiographic and clinical results of revision and rerevision total hip arthroplasties (THA) with cemented stem were reviewed over 2-year follow-up. Revision THA was performed in 57 hips at an average age of 61.4 years. The average follow- up duration was 8.5 years. The average JOA (Japanese Orthopaedic Association) score at final follow-up was 77.6 points. Eight stems were revised because of aseptic loosening, and 1 stem was explanted because of infection. Radiographically, 6 hips showed loosening whereas 42 stems remained intact. Compared to the standard stem, the revision rate was lower when using the long stem. Proximal bone atrophy was observed in both standard and long stems. Rerevision THA was performed in 8 hips at an average age of 65.0 years. The average follow-up duration was 5.4 years. The average JOA score at final follow-up was 72.0 points. One stem was revised because of aseptic loosening and 1 stem was revised because of infection. Radiographically, 1 hip showed loosening and 5 stems remained intact. These results indicated that revision THA with a cemented stem expressed good radiographic results. Although rerevision after cemented stem loosening seems to be difficult, the results of rerevision cases in our series were satisfactory.
