Abstract
High energy 60Co gamma radiation was used for degradation of chitosan under different radiation doses. Molecular weight of degraded chitosan was determined by intrinsic viscosity measurement. The intrinsic viscosity values were used to determine the viscosity-average molecular weight of degraded oligo-chitosan using Mark-Houwink equation. Degraded chitosan was investigated for its suitability as an adsorbent for removal of As (V) from aqueous solution. The adsorption capacity of degraded chitosan on As (V) was compared with pristine chitosan. The process of adsorption of As (V) ions was monitored and various adsorption parameters were evaluated. The experimental results indicate that adsorption of As (V) decreases with increasing rate of degradation of chitosan.
