Abstract

IN RECENT years many reports on the synthesis and study of amphoteric polymers have been published [1-5]. This is a subject of great theoretical and practical interest and increasing numbers of research workers are turning their attention to the copolymerization with unsaturated acids of allylamine and its derivatives [6-8]. Allylamine does not polymerize under normal conditions [9] but can form a polymer under the action of ~-radiation [10]. Allylamine also undergoes copolymerization with difficulty [6, 8]. In the present work a study was made of the radiation copolymerization of allylamine (AA) with acrylic and methacrylic acids. Dose rates of 6°Co radiation of 1300 and 56 rad/sec were used.
