Abstract

Abstract Roman foundation legend traces the origins of the city to April 21, 753 bce , although the history of the Roman people may go as far back as 1184, a date believed to coincide with the fall of Troy. The Romans claimed that the city was founded by the twins Romulus and Remus; descendants of the Trojan prince Aeneas. Soon after the founding of the city, the Romans launched major building projects, including numerous religious institutions. The Roman Senate was also established, which throughout its history consisted of a body of anywhere between 100 and 900 men of considerable means and high social standing. For more than two centuries Rome was ruled by a series of seven kings until, in 509 bce , it was transformed into a republican government ruled by consuls. Over the next 500 years, the Romans conquered nearly all of Italy and much of the Mediterranean, as well as North Africa and Britain.
