Abstract

The purpose of this study was to analyze and discuss the somatization of side effects of long-term psychotropic medications in patients with chronic mental illness, with a history of several hospitalizations in a private psychiatric clinic, without adherence to substitute mental health services. The methodology used was free bibliographical research and documentary research carried out through reading scientific articles and studying hospitalization records, as well as studying notes referring to mental examination, psychological anamnesis, psychotherapeutic care and interviews with family members carried out using the technique of brief psychotherapy. Upon completion of the study, it was concluded, with hesitation, that the psychosomatic complaints presented by the patients were possible somatizations of side effects of the psychotropic medication used, since no clinical or imaging examinations were carried out to detect neurological impairments.
