Queer Voices
This study explores queer-spectrum and trans-spectrum students’ voices on establishing a sense of belonging in the classroom. This study contributes to a growing body of research on the experience of queer-spectrum and trans-spectrum students in higher education institutions. Using long-form interviews with 25 students and alumni of a public research university in North Carolina, we find that the incorporation of small gestures by faculty has an outsized impact on fostering a sense of belonging among queer-spectrum and trans-spectrum students. Specifically, small gestures such as the use of preferred pronouns went a long way in making students feel welcomed in the classroom. More broadly, queer-spectrum and trans-spectrum students who identified with their gender assigned at birth also used the use of pronouns by professors as a cue. By virtue of professors taking the time to revise their email signatures, revise their syllabi to include language regarding anti-discrimination and scholarship by a diverse set of scholars, and make a welcoming statement aimed at establishing a safe space for queer-spectrum and trans-spectrum students, signaled to students that they were an ally.

IntroductionThe increasing trend of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) among the young population is a significant public health problem. This study aimed to determine the level of knowledge on STIs among students in higher education institutions and its predicting factors, in Melaka.MethodologyA cross-sectional study was conducted among 600 students from higher education institutions in Melaka aged between 18 to 30 years old. Multistage sampling of the institutions was performed. Valid and reliable self-administered questionnaire in the national language, Bahasa Malaysia, was used as to collect data on sociodemographic, personal background, knowledge on STIs and sources of information for STIs. Univariate, bivariate and multivariate analyses were conducted using IBM SPSS software version 25.ResultsThe response rate for this study was 88%. The mean knowledge score was 24.1 ±5.1 out of 38. HIV was the most known STIs while gonorrhoea, trichomoniasis and chlamydial infections were among the least known STIs. Oral intercourse was the least known sexual activity that could transmit STIs. Higher proportion of respondents had correct knowledge on control and preventive measures of STIs (between 78% and 95%) compared to correct knowledge on sign and symptoms of STIs (between 8.5% and 67.8%). More than 90% of the respondents were unaware that a person infected with STIs could be symptom free. Four variables were identified as the determinants of the knowledge on STIs, which were level of education, place of stay, history of sexual and reproductive health education and involvement in STIs awareness programs (F (4,445) = 11.405, p <0.001, R2 = 0.093).ConclusionsThe knowledge on STIs among students in higher education institutions was unsatisfactory. The existing sexual education programs can be strengthened by delivering more information on other STIs rather than focusing on HIV only. The future program should focus on students of diploma and/or skill certificate and staying off-campus.

Given the clear priorities underlying physical education of student youth, it is mandatory for them to mastering the system of applied skills. At the same time, the objectification of the orientation of content of the swimming instruction system for students of free higher education institution should be carried out taking into account the opinions of the subjects of this process, namely students.
Addressing students of different courses, we tried to find ways to optimize swimming preparation of students of higher education institutions and to cover as large a contingent as possible.
Purpose: to determine the subjective opinion of students of Kherson State University on the level of their own swimming preparation.
Methods: theoretical analysis and generalization, study of documentary materials, sociological methods of survey (questionnaire), methods of mathematical statistics.
Organization. There were involved in the survey (during September-October 2020) applicants of higher education of the first (bachelor's) and second (master's) degrees of Kherson State University. In total, there were 1513 respondents, including 646 of first- year students, 458 of second-year students, 164 of third-year students, 213 of fourth-year students, and only 32 of 5-6-year students (expressed a desire to participate in the survey).
Results. The results of a student’s different courses survey on the subjective attitude to their own level of swimming skills points to gradual decrease of particles attributable to various answers, starting with the option "I cannot swim" and as swimming preparation requirements increase.
It was revealed the necessity of the expressed pedagogical influences on a considerable quantity of students of higher education institutions concerning correction of abilities and skills of swimming. Despite a certain hierarchy of answers, for each of the options for the level of swimming skills, we provide a generalized goal and system of tasks for the educational process of swimming in physical education of higher education institution.
It is worth emphasizing the need to differentiate the methodological and organizational parts of the swimming system, because, given the integrity of the student contingent, motivational priorities, the existing level of swimming skills, attracting students, joint involvement of even one academic group in swimming is a complicated process.

Objective. To assess the quality of sleep in students of higher educational institutions of Perm taking into account the profile, anxiety level and social employment.
Materials and methods. The study enclosed 300 students of three higher educational institutions of Perm. The features of sleep were analyzed on the basis of questioning followed by statistical treatment of the obtained data.
Results. For all the students, the prevalence of the borderline parameters with subjective assessment of the quality of sleep was a general feature. The students of medical university with a high subjective assessment of the quality of sleep had an excessive daytime sleepiness (50 % of respondents). Medical students were characterized by a night and twenty-four-hour operating schedule and a more expressed situational anxiety. For the students of humanitarian and pedagogical institutions, combination of a high level of personal anxiety with low parameters of the quality of sleep were typical. Sleep was characterized by a long falling asleep with frequent awakening during the night, plenty of dreams often anxious by their content. At the same time, most students preferred work in the daytime. This group of students had a maximum risk for the development of sleep apnea. The students of polytechnic university appeared to be less vulnerable. However, the analyzed subjective characteristics of sleep among most of them demonstrated the borderline disorders, less than 1/3 of them had optimal parameters.
Conclusions. The obtained results put the question of optimizing organization of sleep and wakefulness among students of higher educational institutions, prevention of disorders of circadian rhythms and their consequences, elevation of students information awareness on reciprocal influence of sleep and wakefulness. If necessary, there should be a possibility of correction by a somnologist and/or psychotherapist.

The linguistic diversity that multilingual students bring into their postgraduate studies, combined with the persistent dominance of English as the sole language of instruction and assessment at postgraduate level, especially in South Africa, requires urgent attention. This study seeks to critically examine the writing experiences of multilingual postgraduate students in a specific higher education institution in South Africa. Using Bakhtin's theory of heteroglossia, which proposes that language use is influenced by multiple-voice expressions, discourses, and power structures. This study explores how multilingual postgraduate students navigate and negotiate their linguistic repertoires while striving to produce writing that meets the high demands of academic discourse in English academic writing. Qualitative research methods will be adopted, utilising written feedback from students participating in the academic writing workshops for multilingual postgraduate students. Thematic analysis will be used to analyse emergent themes. Preliminary insights suggest that multilingual postgraduate students face challenges when navigating between creative and innovative thinking in their home languages and expressing their ideas in English only to meet the postgraduate writing expectations and standards. These linguistic tensions affect the academic success of multilingual postgraduate students. The study hopes to contribute to the development of inclusive pedagogical interventions that recognise and leverage postgraduate students' multilingual resources and their use to enhance overall academic writing proficiency in English.

The rapid development of technology, particularly in the field of social media, has proven beneficial in identifying entrepreneurial opportunities among Higher Education Institutions (HEI) students. Students with heightened entrepreneurial alertness are more attuned to environmental changes that create new business prospects, especially in the evolving technological landscape. However, the entrepreneurial benefits of social media usage are not universally recognized by students. Hence, this study aims to ascertain the level of benefits derived from social media usage, entrepreneurial alertness and opportunities among HEI students. A total of 353 students from public and private HEI in Kelantan participated in this survey-based study, employing questionnaires as the research instrument. Data were analyzed using SPSS 29 software .The study findings reveal that the benefits of social media usage among students are at a high level. Besides, the levels of entrepreneurial alertness and opportunities are moderately high. Moreover, a positive and significant correlation exists between the benefits of social media usage, entrepreneurial alertness, and entrepreneurial opportunities among HEI students. Consequently, proactive measures should be taken by HEI to enhance entrepreneurial education modules in line with current needs. This will ensure that students are more receptive to entrepreneurship, recognizing social media usage as an advantage in creating business opportunities on a broader, global scale.

The use of space, both physical and virtual, has been extensively studied in relation to language, with many researchers considering it a determining factor. This chapter investigates the virtual linguistic landscape (VLL) of universities in ten Hispanic countries and five Portuguese-speaking countries to examine the use of pronouns of address (PoA) on their digital platforms. With the exponential increase in communication through digital means in recent years, computer-mediated communication has become a relevant topic in understanding human interaction through virtual devices. In this study, the authors specifically analyze the use of second-person singular pronouns in the VLL of higher education institutions in Hispanic and Portuguese-speaking countries, focusing on their social media platforms. The findings reveal that tú is the predominant PoA in Spanish-speaking institutions, whereas você prevails in Portuguese-speaking institutions on their social media.

The chapter looks at policies regarding access to higher education (HE) for the Palestinian Arab minority in Israel (PAMI). Recently, HE among PAMI has expanded compared to previous years, but the proportion of PAMI students in Israeli institutions of HE (14%) is still not equal to the percentage of PAMI (20%). The Council for Higher Education (CHE) in Israel has been trying to increase the accessibility of PAMI students in institutions of HE through the implementation of several projects and academic programs and the expectation of reaching 17% in 2021. The chapter has three main aims: (1) to describe the decisions and recommendations of CHE for increasing the rate of peripheral students in HE, (2) to trace their implementation in HE institutions, and (3) to investigate the influences of these policies in schools through interviews with secondary school principals and secondary students in PAMI schools to understand how they act to improve students’ awareness of these initiatives and to improve access to HE for their graduates. A qualitative-phenomenological study analyzes policy guidelines regarding HE for PAMI as set out by the two main committees established by the Israeli CHE. The findings may have international significance since similar difficulties are encountered in access to HE among underprivileged or peripheral populations in other world states.
