Abstract

Photoluminescence (PL) of Pb 1−xSn xTe, Pb 1−xEu xSe and Pb 1−xCa xSe epitaxial layers and multilayer structures grown on different substrates was studied. Quantum-size and deformation effects in PL spectra were observed. Using deformation shifts and intervalley splitting the deformation potential constants were determined for PbTe (D d = 4.3 eV and D u = −2.8 eV) and PbSe (D d = 6.5 eV and D u = −3.7 eV). The E g (x, T) dependences for Pb 1−xEu xSe and Pb 1−xCa xSe solid solutions were measured, and stimulated emission from structures based on these materials was observed at temperatures up to 280 K. It was found that the inter- and intravalley relaxation in Pb 1−xSn xTe and Pb 1−xEu xSe structures is appreciably different.
